Word about my dad got to me when we climbed in the engine to head back to the station. I checked my cell and read through his texts telling me what happened and then updating me that he was at the hospital, that he was waiting on an x-ray, and so on. The latest was that he had a boot on his foot, a script for pain meds and a ride home from Theo, who mustâve coincidentally been at the hospital.
I had Van Routen, who was driving the engine, drop me at the school on the way back to the station. If Dad wasnât getting Andy, then I needed to. He wasnât out front, so I bolted inside, making my way to his classroom. I got some looks since I was in my bunker pants and boots, having ditched my coat, but everyone knew me and Andy so they didnât panic that the building was on fire.
I stopped outside the first-grade door when I heard Georgiaâs voice, then Andyâs giggle. Peeking in, she was in one of the little chairs, her knees crunched upâwearing the boots and pink coat I bought herâas Andy stood in front of her. He was dressed to go outside, his Spiderman backpack over his shoulders.
Obviously, the one text Dad forgot to share was that heâd gotten her to pick up Andy.
I hadnât seen her since the meeting the day before and hadnât had a chance to tell her how much I liked her work on the calendar. But the night before when I peeked out the back window to the apartment over the garage, the lights had been out. While Iâd wanted nothing more than to climb in bed with her, if she was asleep, I didnât want to wake her.
I left for the station early, but her car was already gone, her off to work before me.
I was about to walk into the classroom, but then I heard what she told him, how gentle and kind she was with his tenderhearted emotions. How I was making my dislike of the calendar that obvious. That I looked at her funny. Thank fuck that wasnât how babies were made because sheâd be popping out kids left and right. I couldnât do anything but look at her with the need to show up at the garage apartment with an entire box of condoms so we could finish what we started.
So I leaned a shoulder against the wall and eavesdropped.
Finally, she mentioned hot chocolate and everything about making babies and being his mom was forgotten. They were friends. Marshmallow lovers united.
While I didnât think the issue with Andy wanting Georgia to be his mom was over, sheâd appeased him for now. For that, I was thankful.
I ducked into a neighboring classroom so they didnât see me as they made their way down the hall. The radio tucked onto my bunker pants began to squawk and I instantly turned it down.
Andy was fine. Safe. I trusted Georgia with him and I didnât want to interrupt their hot chocolate date.
